If it’s more than a decade since you’ve been to Townsville, North Queensland, you’d be amazed at the change that has taken place on The Strand. A massive public works project has transformed this into one of Australia’s most beautiful waterfronts, and among the restaurants and cafes taking advantage of it is C Bar, right on the beach with sensational views over the sea to Magnetic Island. With a contemporary décor and alfresco dining, the café has a flexible menu, with lunch from 11am to 4pm, “grazing” from 4pm and dinner from 6pm. But it is breakfast, till 11am, that is the real treat. Apple and cinnamon pancakes are smothered with almond butter and maple syrup, so it takes an order of fresh fruit salad on the side to ease the guilt. A tall glass of mango juice seems fitting in the tropics, but it’s the deliciously frothy cappuccino that hits the right spot. Classics such as eggs benedict and bircher muesli are on offer, but bacon and eggs gets a new twist with rosti and there are several omelettes, including one made with smoked salmon and cottage cheese. It’s a great kick-start for the day.
