Dinner at this cool Asian restaurant gets off to a great start with a sensational caprioska enjoyed on comfy sofas in the upstairs cocktail lounge. The downstairs dining area has a relaxed, modern feel with blends of stone and timber, groovy lights and a Buddha statue. The owner/chef Nhut Nuynh oversees a modern Asian menu with Chinese, Thai and particularly Vietnamese influences. In keeping with the simplicity of the name, RQ, an abbreviation for Rice Quarter, the food is uncomplicated, with no heavy sauces or added MSG. At $12.50 for entrées, $19.50 for mains and $8.90 for desserts, prices are reasonable for such thoughtfully prepared food. Must-have entrees include the crab and prawn wontons in a broth with lovely sharp flavours and lots of ginger;
the betel leaf salad of tea-smoked duck and roast Sechuan duck, which
looks gorgeous and has great flavours; and the prawn balls studded with flaked roasted almonds so that they look like porcupines. For mains, try the wok-tossed prawns with green mango salad and a spicy dipping sauce. The restaurant’s famous dessert plate, offered for groups, includes treats such as Red Bull and strawberry sorbet, coconut icecream, chocolate tart, brown sugar pie, vanilla pannacotta and lychees. Mouthwatering Belle Fleur chocolates, Illy coffee and T2 teas end the meal on a high note.
