It’s not often that diners are invited to catch their food with their mouths but it’s all part of the fun at Benihana in the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort. The showmanship of the teppanyaki chefs extends not just to throwing prawns to bemused diners, but also to balancing eggs on the grill, stacking up onion rings to form a “volcano” and throwing the odd utensil or two. With 16 teppanyaki grills divided between a large main dining room and numerous private spaces, Benihana describes itself as Australia’s largest specialist teppanyaki restaurant. The only Australian branch of an American chain, it offers a great choice of banquets comprised around chicken, steak and seafood. The fillet mignon is deliciously tender, while the hibachi chicken, scallops and prawns are lightly grilled with just a touch of Japanese soy to bring out the natural flavours. Various types of sushi and side dishes such as miso soup and tempura prawns, fish and vegetables are also available. The quantity of butter that goes into the Hibachi chicken fried rice probably owes more to New York than to Tokyo, but the result is unashamedly more-ish. In any case, there’s a chance to redeem oneself with the tiniest of fruit platters for dessert and healthy green tea to accompany this delectable feast.
