Located in a hamlet eight kilometres from Beechworth on a road to nowhere in particular, The Galloping Goat gets little passing trade yet has been constantly busy since it opened in late 2004. The faux-Mediterranean building set in neatly manicured grounds has become a destination in itself, with chef Michel Renoux serving superb French-inspired food using the finest regional produce. The décor is sophisticated rustic, with huge timber beams, striking Moroccan doors, stone fireplaces and an outdoor deck overlooking the lawns where ducks and geese wander. The menu focuses on game such as venison, duck, quail and rabbit served in dishes such as a terrine with roasted tomato coulis, and rabbit cassoulet with haricot beans.
Exquisite fresh local walnuts are combined with apple and pear in a salad served with the confit of duck. Highly recommended for lunch is the Assiette Provencale ($19.50), a tasting sampler which includes the terrine, melt-in-the-mouth Milawa goat cheese tartlet with rocket salad, crumbed Jack mackerel on saffron pilaf, quiche with ratatouille, and oven-baked pork cutlet with apple, cheese and mustard crust. The tasting plate – a “ménage a trios” of chocolate mousse, flan and crème caramel – is also the way to go with dessert. The wine list has an extensive and impressive selection of local and imported wines, with mark-ups that are not outrageous.
