There’s an uncomfortably long wait at the door before we are shown to our table, but once seated, we settle in and enjoy the ambience of this lovely restaurant, located in an old shop that has been given a bright, contemporary look. Owner/chef Lien Yeomans cooks dishes from her native Vietnam with a modern twist, and it is clear that a lot of love and care has gone into the food. Whether or not this is enough to make up for the high prices ($15 for two rice paper rolls; $36 for a main dish of prawns) is a matter of opinion, but there’s a terrific array of dishes to choose from, including the legendary Hanoi fish dish, cha ca, and the classic green papaya salad.
Lemon myrtle, an Australian native ingredient, adds an interesting twist to one of the prawn dishes, while a colourful seafood stir-fry of cuttlefish, prawns and scallops with snow peas, jicama and fungi is the choice dish of the evening. The dishes are served on beautiful crockery, some individually crafted with the Green Papaya name.
The black rice pudding for dessert is a highlight, the rice in two mounds creating a heart shape, topped with heart-shaped coconut milk wedges. The wine list has an excellent selection of Australian and imported wines.
