Picture of Casa di Nico
On a balmy evening in Sydney, it would be hard to think of a more perfect way to pass the time than dining alfresco by the water. Casa di Nico, the fourth and latest venture from Nick Manettas, fits the bill on all counts. Nick’s restaurants are known for their unpretentious food and reasonable prices, with an emphasis on fresh seafood and chargrills. This one overlooking Darling Harbour is no exception, adding an Italian flavour with at least eight pasta dishes and six pizzas that come piping hot from a wood-fired oven. It wouldn’t be Sydney without oysters, and those on the menu here are fresh and succulent, the perfect prelude to mains such as salmon and lemon butter, or “fruits of the sea”, a hearty dish of spaghetti tossed in a tomato sauce with prawns, calamari, vognole and mussels. There is also a children’s menu with the usual offerings such as pizza, lasagne and chicken nuggets. The ambience is casual and relaxed, and despite the restaurant seating up to 300 people, there’s a feeling of spaciousness. There’s an extensive selection of cocktails, beers and Italian and Australian wines, with an impressive number available by the glass. Excellent advice from the knowledgeable staff ensures that some great choices are made, including an Italian moscato that goes beautifully with the very more-ish cassata on the dessert menu.
