The Wineglass Bar & Grill sums up everything that is good about Mudgee – fantastic local produce, historic buildings that are quintessentially Australian, and enterprising folk who are working to put their town on the map. Scott Tracey bought an old Cobb & Co inn four years ago and turned it into the chic Cobb & Co Court Boutique Hotel. The downstairs restaurant is stylishly rustic, with timber furnishings, terracotta floor and an eye-catching corrugated iron and timber bar. Local wines feature heavily on the list and there’s a good selection by the glass. Scott is not only head chef but also handles the floor with aplomb, talking to his guests and seeking feedback. Scones, pastries and cakes are available with coffee throughout the day and Scott is frequently asked the secret of his scone recipe. The lunch and dinner menus highlight fresh regional produce. Mouth-watering Schezuan duck is the perfect match for a big, bold and proudly local Robert Stein Reserve Shiraz, while moist and tender barbecued chicken breast is served with sautéed pinkeye potatoes, herb salad and a subtle zucchini sauce. The light lunch dishes become entrees at dinner: king prawn risotto with chilli jam, duck ragu with papperdelle pasta, and a superb antipasto plate. Desserts are a treat: classic tiramisu gets a nice touch with candied almonds, while the sweetness of the self-saucing hot chocolate fondant is beautifully balanced with berry compote and mascarpone, a lovely way to finish.
