I love this sign because it’s such a Chinese way of describing the view. “What a spectacle except for the dam,” it says. Taiwan’s Taroko Gorge is indeed a spectacle, with the Liwu River winding through mist-shrouded mountains of marble and limestone. Although this photo doesn’t do it justice (the foliage gets in the way), the gorge is one of the wonders of the world. I’ve seen it three or four times and never tire of its beauty. As we walked along the forest trails leading from an indigenous-run lodge, butterflies fluttered around and an orchestra of birds and cicadas was at fever pitch. If you listened for a moment, you could just hear the river flowing through the gorge. Another sign captured the moment: “Rhythm of river.”

Damn! This would be a great picture except for the spectacle.
