Champagne Duperrey Premier Cru Brut NV, $39.99

For those wanting a genuine Champagne experience at an affordable price, this non-vintage Premier Cru Brut fits the bill nicely. Aromatic with fine persistent bubbles, it has a rich yeasty flavour with appealing notes of citrus, stonefruits and lemon curd. Aged on yeast lees for at least 2½ years, it has good complexity but retains a lively freshness. The wine is made for the Australian market by long-established Champagne house, G.H. Martel, which has prized vineyards across France’s Champagne region. Appropriately, the name has an Australian connection: it is named after French explorer Louis Isidore Duperrey who sailed across Australia’s Southern Ocean in 1823 while circumnavigating the globe. With new sophisticated labelling, this elegant bubbly is available exclusively from Dan Murphy’s.
