Leconfield 2017 Old Vine Riesling, $26
A lot of people might be surprised to know that South Australia’s Coonawarra region produces some fine Riesling. Much more famous for its reds, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, it needs to shout louder when it comes to Riesling. Yet here you have a vineyard that was planted more than four decades ago with vines that are still dry-grown and which have matured into something really special. Every year these wonderful old vines produce a crop of intensely flavoured fruit with great varietal character, the result being an elegant, dry wine with zingy citrus notes and a long, clean finish. Pop it in the fridge for a great aperitif or let it come to the party for a seafood feast – either way you can’t go wrong.
