Riversdale Estate Crater Tasmania Chardonnay 2011

You’ve got to love a cool-climate Chardonnay, especially one as impressive as this one from a sustainably managed vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. A radio telescope towers over the landscape here, so the owners turned to the cosmos for inspiration in naming their wines. The Crater is crisp and fresh with citrusy notes, subtle oak and a lingering finish. Vigneron Ian Roberts says they grew tired of their grapes winning medals for wines made by their grape buyers and not getting the recognition themselves, so they launched their Riversdale Estate label in 2008 exclusively through online wine retailer, Cellarmasters. It’s a move that has more than paid off with great success on the show circuit, including a staggering eight trophies from national wine shows for this winning drop.
