Our wonderful neighbours are always treating us to delicious goodies and this week we are the delighted recipients of their home-baked stolen. A German cake that is traditionally eaten at Christmas, it’s made with dried fruit, spices and marzipan and covered with icing sugar. It’s quite a dense cake and keeps longer than you might expect, because it is slathered with melted unsalted butter and rolled in sugar as soon as it comes out of the oven. (Not that you’d want to keep it long … it’s very more-ish.) We’ve been enjoying it with an exquisite chocolate liqueur from Tamborine Mountain Distillery. Merry Christmas from all of us at Food Wine Travel and may this festive season be the icing on your cake.
