Postcard of the Week: Canberra, Australia

Parliament House, CanberraNo question about it, I have to start this series with a postcard from my fave Australian city and my home of 27 years, Canberra. There’s another good reason for featuring it first up – the city has just celebrated its 100th birthday and not only was it a great opportunity for a party but hopefully it might just have made Aussies a teeny bit proud of their national capital (yes, I know that’s a big ask!) This photo of Parliament House was taken from a hot-air balloon. Eagle eyes might see that it was taken in 2000, before barriers were erected on the grassed slopes. Architect Romaldo Giurgola’s vision was to capture the nature of Australia’s open democracy by allowing people to walk above the politicians. Now, in these crazy times, we can still walk on the grass roof but it can only be accessed from inside.
